My hobby is playing guitar, and I have become a "youtuber", known as OldGuitarMonkey. I record myself playing the guitar and upload videos to YouTube. I have over one thousand videos currently uploaded. You may click the "List of Videos" link to view some of these videos or visit my YouTube Channel to see all my uploads. It's interesting to see how the quality of the recordings has improved in such a short time since I first started. I try to upload two videos each week to YouTube. I play guitar for pleasure, so I don't strive for perfection in each tune. I get bored if a tune takes too long to learn as I am not a very patient person. lol I now have around 287,000,000 views and 503,000 followers.
I play by ear
A lot of people wonder how I learn to play new songs. I don't read music score, or guitar tabs. I play by ear. Now what does this mean? I certainly don't pluck the strings with my ears. So, what do I do?
To me, playing by ear means that I can match two notes in my head. I hear a note in the original tune, and I can then find the matching note on the guitar.
So, when I learn a new tune, I listen to the tune over and over until I know it. Then I pick a couple of bars and listen to each note and find it on the guitar. Once I can play those two bars, I move onto the next couple of bars.
This sounds rather laborious, but you must realise that I have been doing this for 60 years, so I can do it quite quickly. So there you have it...no magic...just hard work.
